Crimson Wrestling Sends 8 to State Individual Championships

Gawboy, O’Kane, Rekuski Section Champs; Seubert named Section Coach of the Year

After upsetting Centennial last week to win the team section championship, the Crimson wrestling team went into the Section 5AAA individual tournament hoping to maintain their momentum, and the wrestlers kept on track.  The top two finishers in each weight class in this tourney would advance to compete in the state individual tournament, being held this Wednesday through Saturday, 3-6 March at the Xcel Energy Center.

Coming into this tourney, the team had 10 wrestlers seeded in the top three, so they had high hopes of eclipsing their past record of sending 4 wrestlers to individual state in one year.

Junior Jacob Halvorson, wrestling at 103#, pinned his first opponent, but lost a close match 1-2 in the semifinals.  He won his first match in the consolation bracket and then had a thrilling 4-3, quadruple overtime victory to place 3rd.

Sophomore Zack Gawboy, seeded first at 112#, pinned his first two opponents and won in the championship round 13-0, to earn his first section championship and second trip to the state tourney.

Senior Ryan O’Kane, seeded 2nd at 119#, pinned his first opponent, and beat his second one, 5-1, to advance to the finals.  Coming back from a 1-4 deficit after the first period, and being behind 6-8 after the 2nd, he tied up the match and it went into overtime.   He got the first takedown and became Maple Grove’s second section champ.  This is O’Kane’s first section championship and first trip to state.

In a strong 125# competition boasting four wrestlers with 20 or  more wins on the season, and two ranked in the top 7 in state, sophomore Jonny Dill, was seeded 3rd.  He won his first match 10-2, and then faced his #7 ranked opponent in the semifinals.  Down 0-4 going into the 3rd period, Dill chose a neutral starting position and maneuvered his opponent into a headlock and took him down to the mat.  Dill then hung on to force him to his back and tightened his hold to finally get the pin with 49 seconds left in the match!   Dill lost in the finals and took 2nd in the tourney, earning his first trip to state.

Senior Zach Quam, seeded 2nd at 135#, pinned his first opponent and beat his second one 12-5, sending him into the finals match against   the #6 ranked wrestler in the state.  Quam, wrestling a great match and tying it up 1-1 in the 3rd period, got taken down, escaped and then ran out of time and lost a close one 2-3, to take 2nd place and earn his first trip to state.

Junior Frank Cramer, wrestling at 140# in arguably the deepest and toughest weight class with four wrestlers with 24 or more wins and two top ten ranked wrestlers, lost his first match, won his second, but lost his third, to take fourth in the tourney.

Senior Adam Whirley, wrestling at 152#, won his first two matches by major decisions, and then lost to his #3 ranked opponent in the finals.  Whirley placed second and earned his first trip to the state tourney.

Unseeded junior John Herbes, at 160#, knocked off the #4 seed by pinning him in the second period.  He then lost to the eventual 1st and 3rd place winners, but pinned his opponent in the final round to place 5th.

#1 seeded junior Dan Rekuski, at 171#, pinned his first opponent, won his second round match 8-0, and pinned in the finals to become Maple Grove’s third section champion and earn his first trip to the state tourney.

Senior Joseph Borchardt, getting the number two seed behind the #1 ranked wrestler in the state at 215#, pinned his way into the finals, but lost 0-5 to take 2nd place.  In a true second match after the finals, he also pinned his opponent.  This is Borchardt’s second trip to the state tourney.

Senior Chad Thompson, in a season where he stepped in to replace injured two time state entrant Justin Piche, received the second seed in the heavy weight division.  He pinned his first opponent, and beat his second in an 8-3 decision.   In the finals, he took the #1 seed into OT, but lost a heartbreaker 5-1.   He won a true second match after that, placing 2nd and earning his first trip to the state tournament.

Rounding out the Maple Grove participants were sophomore Andy Quam, at 130#, and senior Jacob Otterson, at 189#.

In a brief ceremony prior to the wrestlers awards ceremony, Crimson Coach Troy Seubert was recognized as Section 5AAA Head Coach of the Year.  Seubert took the Crimson from a 6th place finish at sections three years ago, to 3rd place one year ago, and then won the championship this year.

Individual wrestling at the state tournament starts at 6 p.m. for class AAA this Wednesday and the first match for the Crimson team is against St. Michael-Albertville at 9:30 a.m. this Thursday.  Team and individual competitions are at the Xcel Energy Center.
