Crimson wrestlers finish

regular season in record fashion

Finished 4-0 in Final Week

The Maple Grove varsity wrestling team ended their regular season on a high note last Thursday with a 44-29 dual meet victory on the road against the Blaine Bengals.  The victory improved the team’s dual meet record to 3-6 in the NW Suburban Conference and 9-14 overall.

Never before has a Maple Grove wrestling team been as successful as this year’s varsity squad.  The Crimson posted a team dual meet record of 14-7, shattering a previous season record of one win over .500.

Last week the Crimson pounded their final four opponents in astounding fashion by going 4-0 in the final week of the regular season.  On Wednesday, the Crimson defeated Zimmerman 49-14 with a number of JV wrestlers stepping in to take care of business as a handful of varsity wrestlers sat out due to match count.  Also that night Maple Grove toppled the Centaurs of Brooklyn Center 64-9 by taking 12 of 14 weight classes with 8 of those resulting in pins.

On Thursday, the Crimson pummeled the Blaine Bengals 46-16 and the Armstrong Falcons 64-12 as they continued to extend their dual meet record-setting performance.  With the Section 5AAA team tournament this Saturday, many wrestlers were intensifying their efforts and skills as they prepare for the upcoming tournament.  Wrestlers who were undefeated on the week were Adam Whirley (145) and Reid Weiland (130) each going 4-0, while Jonny Dill (125), Jeremy Borchardt (152), and Dan Rekuski (171) all finished strong at 3-0 for the week.

A number of seasoned varsity veterans contributed to this year’s team success.  Leading the way for the Crimson with 27 or more varsity wins were Zack Gawboy (112), Jonny Dill, Dan Rekuski, and Joe Borchardt.  Wrestlers with at least 22 varsity wins include Reid Weiland, Zack Quam (135), Frank Cramer (140), and Adam Whirley.  Chad Thompson who has filled in for the injured Justin Piche has gone 16-2 since stepping on the mat as the varsity heavyweight wrestler for the Crimson.

Junior varsity competition concluded at the NWSC Tournament at Centennial last Saturday.  Three Crimson wrestlers proudly earned individual titles – John Herbes (160), Alex Gray (189), and Aaron Grant (215).

Next up for the Crimson is the Section 5AAA team competition which they host on Saturday, February 20th at Maple Grove High School.

"The boys have worked extremely hard all season long, and it’s definitely paying off.  This is the first time in this team’s history that we have a very strong and legitimate shot at winning the Section 5AAA title and going to state." said Maple Grove head coach Troy Seubert.  "Although it’s been a fantastic season, it’s not done yet.  Early in the season, each varsity wrestler made a personal goal to take this team to state.  Although we (Maple Grove) will most likely get seeded #2 in the tournament behind Centennial, we were only one match away from beating them earlier in the year.  One boy told me this morning that Saturday can’t come fast enough!"
