Maple Grove Crimson defeat Orioles and Pirates in Triangular, Team takes 4th at Mounds View Duals
Last Friday, the Crimson wrestlers defeated the Osseo Orioles 55-14 and Park Center Pirates 53-21 in a triangular meet against their NWSC and Section 5AAA rivals. With victories in seven of the first eight weight classes, Maple Grove jumped out to a commanding lead over the Pirates and never looked back. Jacob Halvorson (103), Zack Gawboy (112), Jonny Dill (125), Reid Weiland (130), Frank Cramer (140), and Adam Whirley (145) all defeated their opponents with pins, while Zach Quam earned tech-fall to open up the match with an insurmountable lead. The Crimson solidified their victory by winning thee of the last four matches with a thrilling over-time win by Dan Rekuski (171), a pin by Joe Borchardt (215) and a 9-4 dec. from second-year wrestler Chad Thompson (hwt). In their second match of the evening, the Maple Grove Crimson and Osseo Oriole wrestling teams battled for control of the Droegemueller Cup. The "Droegy" is a traveling trophy named in honor of long-time Osseo head coach and wrestling hall-of-famer, Ken Droegemueller, who passed away in 2007. This was the seventh time the two rivals have fought for the trophy. Although Maple Grove took possession of the cup for the first time in last year’s exciting 37-33 victory, the Crimson had no intention on handing it back over in front of the hometown host Orioles. Once again, the Crimson jumped out to an overwhelming lead by winning six of their first eight matches; five of which were pins. Zack Gawboy (112) started the pinning streak followed by Ryan O’Kane (119), Jonny Dill (125), Zach Quam (135), and Frank Cramer (140). Adam Whirley continued the winning streak with a 5-0 dec. putting the Crimson lead to 33-7. Although the Orioles came back to win the next two, the Crimson never gave the Orioles a chance to re-claim the "Droegy" by dominating the last four matches. Jacob Otterson (189) contributed to the team’s victory with a 12-2 dec., and Dan Rekuski (171), Joe Borchardt (215), and Chad Thompson (hwt) each ended the night with a pin. There was no rest for the Crimson as they traveled to Mounds View for the Mustang Duals Team Tournament on Saturday. In their first match, Maple Grove defeated a strong and talented Mounds View team 46-22. Mounds View is another 5AAA section rival and is considered to be one of the three teams competing for the section title along with Maple Grove and Centennial. The Crimson followed with a 48-18 victory over Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony, but then fell to Owatonna (ranked #2 in AAA) 45-16 and Little Falls 51-24 to take 4th in the tournament. Several Maple Grove wrestlers had four or more wins for the week. Leading the Crimson were Gawboy and Rekuski with a perfect 6-0 record, and Dill with a 5-1 record for the week. Others include Borchardt (4-0) and Thompson (4-1), along with Quam and Cramer each finishing 4-2. The Crimson will attack another strong week of wrestling by traveling to Elk River for a triangular with Andover on Thursday, Rockford on Friday, and the Eastview High School Tournament on Saturday.
