Crimson Wrestlers First Trip to the Rumble on the Red

          The Crimson wrestling team traveled to Fargo, ND for one of the premier holiday tournaments in the region and came back with a very respectable showing including two place winners.  The team placed 21st, out of 58 schools, ahead of many local teams in their conference and section.  Assistant coach Brad Quam stated, "this was a very tough competition, and our wrestlers were able to find out their weaknesses as well as the strengths that helped them advance.  This will help them know what to work on as we enter the second half of the season.  It was a very worthwhile tournament." 

          All the weight classes had over ten wrestlers ranked in the top ten of their respective state, and many had wrestlers ranked nationally.   Advancing in the tournament and scoring team points were sophomores Zack Gawboy and Jonny Dill; juniors Reid Weiland, Frank Cramer,  and Dan Rekuski; seniors Zach Quam, Jacob Otterson, Joe Borchardt and Justin Piche.

          Borchardt and Piche both wrestled to 6th place finishes, with Piche winning the tournament award for the most pins in the least amount of time.   Piche pinned 6 wrestlers in a total time of 7:14.  Gawboy, at 112#, wrestled into the quarter finals match and then fell just short of the medal round; and Dill, at 125#, lost his first match, but tore up the wrestle back rounds with four straight wins before also falling one round short of medaling.

          Maple Grove’s JV team took 29th out of 56 teams, with senior Ryan O’Kane taking 6th place in that competition.

          The Crimson host perennial powerhouse Anoka on Thursday, January 7th for "Alumni night".   Both teams are ranked "Lean and Mean" in "The Guillotine," Minnesota’s wrestling newsletter.   JV competition starts at 6 p.m., and varsity starts at 7 p.m.
