Crimson Wrestlers Fall to 7th Ranked Coon Rapids in a Nail Biter
Press Release 21 December 2009 Osseo-Maple Grove Press NWCT Channel 12
Crimson Wrestlers Fall to 7th Ranked Coon Rapids in a Nail Biter Maple Grove wrestlers continued demonstrating their improvements over last year as they came up just short of the Cardinals in a conference dual last Thursday at Coon Rapids. Both teams sent wrestlers ranked by The Guillotine to the mat, but the performance by the Crimson's unranked wrestlers kept them in the meet all the way to the end. The Cardinals struck first when their 10th ranked 103 pounder pinned their first match, giving them a 6 point lead. Then #8 ranked sophomore captain Zack Gawboy defeated his senior opponent 8-2, bringing the team score to MG-3, CR-6. The Crimson lost the 119 pound match by a decision but came back at 125 pounds when sophomore Jonny Dill won a close one 8-6, bringing the team score to MG-6, CR-9. The next three matches featured some of the top wrestlers on the Coon Rapids squad and though the Crimson lost the matches, they kept it close enough to keep the team within striking distance for the rest of the meet. The Cardinal’s 3rd ranked 130 pound wrestler had to go the distance with 3rd year Crimson wrestler Reid Weiland. Weiland wrestled with great intensity and strength and lost only by a decision. At 135 pounds, Crimson’s Frank Cramer, wrestled against one of the Cardinals team captains and came close to winning. And Crimson senior captain Zack Quam, wrestling a #2 ranked Cardinal, also kept the team in the meet by going the distance. At 145 pounds, senior captain Adam Whirley picked up another win for the Crimson, and the score was now MG-9, CR-18. The Cardinals won the next two matches by a decision and a fall increasing their lead to 27-9, but the Crimson came storming back. Junior Dan Rekuski, at 171 pounds, won a close won 2-0, adding three more points to the team score. Then senior Jacob Otterson won 7-1 to make the score MG-15, CR-27. With two matches left, the Crimson would need to pin both wrestlers to tie the meet and force a tie breaker based on other scoring criteria. #2 ranked senior captain Joe Borchardt pinned his opponent in the second period, setting up a showdown at heavyweight. Crimson senior captain Justin Piche knew he couldn’t just win his match, but had to pin his opponent, Tanner Lowe, in order for the team to tie. Piche made several attempts to throw Lowe to the mat, but as hard as Piche wrestled, Lowe was able to defend Piche’s moves and won the match 9-7. The final score was Crimson 21, Cardinals 30; a marked improvement over last year’s results, when Coon Rapids won 49-12. "The team wrestled great against Coon Rapids," said head coach Troy Seubert. "We are only scratching the surface of our potential. All fourteen varsity wrestlers are wrestling well and should continue to show improvement over the remainder of the year. I am excited for the rest of the season!" The Crimson now take a 12 day break from competition but kick practice in to high gear over the holiday vacation. On Dec 28th, they will depart for Fargo and the Rumble on the Red tournament, where 58 teams from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota will battle it out. Each weight class boasts no less than ten "Top 10" ranked wrestlers competing from three states across the classes. ********************************************************* Attached photo caption: Crimson sophomore Jonny Dill puts his Coon Rapids opponent in a cradle early in his match.
