Crimson Wrestlers Defend Title at Maple Grove Invitational

Gawboy and Borchardt earn top honors

The Maple Grove Crimson Wrestlers successfully defended their team title in the Maple Grove Invitational Tournament last Saturday. The Crimson topped 12 other schools as they marched on to capture their own tournament for the second straight year.  Annandale/Maple Lake finished second and Roseville took third.

The Crimson had six wrestlers in the finals with Zack Gawboy (112) and Joe Borchardt (215) defending their first place individual titles.  Four others battled their way to second place finishes – Reid Weiland (130), Frank Cramer (135), Dan Rekuski (171), and Justin Piche (Hwt).  Maple Grove’s other place-winners were Jonny Dill (4th @ 125), Greg DuFoe (4th @ 145), Andy Quam (5th @ 119), Zach Quam (5th @ 140), and Tommy Jacobsen (6th @ 160).

The Maple Grove wrestling seniors accepted the team trophy on behalf of the Crimson.  Senior captain Joe Borchardt, who completed his day with 3 pins in 4:06 of wrestling time, said "This is awesome…our team continues to get better every year, and now every week!"  Head coach Troy Seubert stated, "I am very excited and encouraged with the success and the progress this early in the season.  The team has worked extremely hard and this win will continue to provide huge momentum as we head into Coon Rapids next week and the Rumble on the Red Tournament in Fargo on the 29th of December."  Coon Rapids is currently ranked 7th in the state.

Tony Vaske of River Valley won the 145 pound weight class and was voted "Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament".

On Friday of last week, Maple Grove faced defending Section 5AAA champion Centennial in a breath-taking, closely fought dual meet.  The Crimson jumped out to an early lead by winning 5 of the first 6 weight classes, but then falling in 5 of the next 6 weight classes.  The final two matches exchanged wins between the two teams with Centennial winning 34-30.

Before going into the holiday break, the Crimson travel to Coon Rapids in NWSC action for another highly contested dual meet on Thursday, December 17th.  JV action starts at 6 pm and the varsity will wrestle at 7 pm.
