Maple Grove Grapplers Start 2009-2010 Campaign
Press Release 29 November 2008 Osseo-Maple Grove Press NWCT Channel 12 Maple Grove Grapplers Start 2009-2010 Campaign After sending 3 Maple Grove wrestlers to the state tournament last year, Crimson fans immediately set their sights forward on the team’s prospects for their 2009-10 season. That season begins with the conference opener on Friday, December 4th when the Crimson travel to face the Rebels at Champlin Park High School. The Crimson return the highest number of varsity letter-winners and state entrants since 2003 and hope to put together their best season ever. The team has grown to over 50 wrestlers this season, which should provide depth in their line-up and bode well for the future. In the most recent issue of "The Guillotine", a Minnesota amateur wrestling newsletter, Maple Grove is listed in their "Mean and Lean" rankings, identifying them in their list of teams knocking on the door of the top 12 teams in the state. "These rankings are pre-season and like all rankings, are only good on paper; it’s the work ethic and dedication that the boys put in the wrestling room that will define the success of the team when it counts - at the end of the season," says head coach Troy Seubert, now in his fourth year. "We’ve assembled a great coaching staff and have a number of terrific wrestlers on the team with more depth than I’ve ever had. I appreciate the respect our program has received and am very excited for the season!" This year’s Maple Grove Wrestling senior class is dedicating this season to their former classmate and fellow wrestler, Will Tresvant, who succumbed to cancer two years ago. Tresvant was part of a group of five 9th grade wrestlers, including Joe Borchardt, Justin Piche, Zack Quam, and Adam Whirley, who, in 2007, all qualified for the 9th grade state tournament, the Crimson’s first-ever qualifiers. Rounding out the rest of the senior class are Ryan O’Kane, Jacob Otterson, Chad Thompson, Tommy Jacobson, and Sharif Takyrbashev. Anoka and Coon Rapids are favored to finish on top in the tough Northwest Suburban Conference, with Centennial the pre-season favorite to win the Section 5AAA title. Seubert is very confident about his team’s prospects after graduating only one varsity starter last year and looks to challenge each of these teams for the conference and section championships. Friday’s junior varsity action starts at 6 pm, and the varsity will wrestle at 7 pm. On Saturday, December 5th, the Crimson will also wrestle at the Lakeville North Panther Invitational Tournament.
