Crimson Wrestlers Start Season Strong
Press Release
NWCT Channel 12
Maple Grove wrestlers opened their 2009-2010 season with a commanding win over the Rebels of Champlin Park and followed up with a strong showing at the Lakeville North Invitational Tourney last weekend. On Friday night, the Crimson traveled to Champlin Park for their first Northwest Suburban Conference duel. The last time these two teams met was in the quarter finals of last season’s section tournament when Maple Grove won 35-31. This year the Crimson, having only lost one varsity wrestler to graduation, had high expectations, and though the Rebels kept it close through the first10 matches, the Crimson pinned in each of their last four matches to win 47-18. Seventh-grader Joey Neumann (103 lbs) led the Crimson off to a 6-0 lead with a pin in his first varsity match. The duel went back and forth with Crimson wins coming from sophomore Jonny Dill (125, major decision), junior Reid Weiland (130, 6-5 decision), senior Adam Whirley (145, major decision), and then pins by junior Dan Rekuski (171), and seniors Jacob Otterson (189), Joe Borchardt (215) and Justin Piche (hwt). The Crimson spent Saturday at the Paul Wolf Panther Invitational tournament with 16 teams and over 20 ranked wrestlers from Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Crimson qualified nine wrestlers into the medal round and improved their team standing from 9th place last year to 3rd place this year. "We wrestled well," said Coach Troy Seubert. "We identified many areas we need to improve, but it’s early and I’m happy with where we are right now." The team was led by sophomore Zack Gawboy (112) and Joe Borchardt, who each placed 2nd. Piche and Whirley earned 3rd place finishes, while Dill, Cramer and Rekuski completed the day 4-1 for 5th place finishes. Sophomore Jeremy Borchardt (160) and Otterson each took 6th place honors. Highlights for the tournament include when Dill dislocated his finger with 15 seconds left in his 3rd match, had it straightened by a trainer and went back in to complete his win 12-6, then won his remaining two matches by pins; Cramer, who was 4-1 at the meet, had pins for all his wins; Rekuski, who won his medal round match with a 3-2 double overtime victory; and Joe Borchardt, who beat the #1 ranked wrestler in his weight class. This week, the Crimson have their home opener against conference foe and defending section champion, Centennial, on Friday, Dec 11th. JV starts at 6 p.m. and Varsity starts at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, they host and defend their championship at the Maple Grove Invitational. The event is an individual tournament and starts at 10 a.m. Attached photo caption: Maple Grove junior Frank Cramer, 135#, works on his first win and pin for the season at the Paul Wolf Panther Invite wrestling tournament at Lakeville North High School on Saturday, Dec 5th.
