Football rosters, recruiting info, and more...

11/14/08

It was great to see everybody at the kickoff meeting Wed.  I thought it was a good meeting.  We covered a lot so if you didn't catch it all feel free to ask questions.  Here's some follow-up on my part.

The optional pre - Chipotle football game is this Sunday at 2:30p.  Here's the rosters (as they stand right now):

Team A:  Joseph, Luke Piche, Alex Gray, Kevin Yi, Reid, Jon D., Mark D, and Zach G.

Team B:  Justin, Jeremy, Greg, Austin, Frank, Adam H., Marshal, and looking for at least one more to make the teams.

I'll be out there refereeing unless we somehow get enough to create a coaches/parents team and play two games of 5 on 5.  This should be a fun team builder and I'm glad to see we have four first year guys participating.  Email me at UWECWrestling@Hotmail.com if you would like to play but your name isn't on the list.  The more the better!  Remember even if you don't play you're still invited to eat Chipotle at 5pm at the one located by the high school.

Like I said we covered a lot of information at that meeting.  I want to make sure all wrestlers and their parents get the appropriate hand-outs.  Here's the one's that are most important:  Wrestler expectations, Practice Room expectations (for parents), Grade sheet sign-up (for parents), goal sheet and the goal meeting sign-up form.  If you didn't get any of these let me know and I'll make sure to get it to you.

Also here's the current referring wrestlers statistics:

Alex Gray has the lead with 2

Justin, Aaron Grant, Jesse Hawthorne, and Travis Crego are all tied with one.

Remember the first free Chipotle burrito of the season goes to the wrestler with the most referrals.  Somebody's got to be able to catch Alex!!!  Remember we need size... especially for the 9th grade team and for the varsity in a couple seasons when Justin and Joseph graduate!

Here's a list of interested potential wrestlers who could use some encouragement:

Drew Welle (12), David Guerewitz (12), Tom Baker (11)

Cody Backmann, 9 (looking for his number if anybody knows it); Nate Mannstedt, 7 (OJH)

Joseph Cupehart, 9 (OJH); Patrick Mendin, 8 (OJH); Che Wilson, 8 (OJH)

Justin McCollor, 7 (OJH); Alex Peterson, 7 (OJH); Josh Eitel, 9 (OJH); Mason Kaliszewski, 8 (OJH)

Justin Harris, 7 (OJH - looking for his correct phone number if anybody knows him)

Trevor Johnson, 8 (OJH); Jesse Wuollet, 7 (OJH); Brandon Soular, 9 (MGJH)

Abdul, 7 (MGJH); Charlie Johnson, 9 (MGJH); Matt Balko*, 9 (MGJH)

Belphis, 9 (MGJH); Sam Kirgiss, 7 (MGJH)

Thomas (not sure his last name but short with dark hair), 7 (MGJH)

Alright I think that's it for now.  See Most of you Monday at Capt. Practice.

Thanks to everyone who attended the kickoff.  It was awesome to see everyone and all the new wrestlers!

Please be sure to send us your email addresses and phone numbers as we create an email list as well as a paper copy to distribute to all wrestlers, parents with contact information.  Email Elizabeth

Also parents be sure to come to the meets and bring family and friends to cheer on our team!

Coach Josh mentioned he could use more Junior High kids for the 9th grade team so do some recruiting.

Important Dates to Remember...

The season is right around the corner now (practices start this month).  Behind the scenes it feels like we are already in full swing.  Here's a few dates this month that may interest people:

Nov. 15 - Benefit dinner for Kelly McConnville's daughter Hazel (in case people are interested).

Nov. 16 - Touch football and free chipotle feed for those interested.  I believe you are to meet at the MGSH fields at 2 pm.  Ask Troy to be sure.

Nov. 17, 19, 21 - Meet with Coach Troy after school to review goals (should take 10 minutes each).  Sign - up for your date and time at the kick-off meeting.

Nov. 19 - Pull-up challenge in the wrestling gym after school.  Starts when the Jr Hi wrestlers arrive at 3:15.

Nov. 22 - Cub Foods bagging and pre-season party at Sue and Bob Gray's house.  12901 89th Ave N (park on the side streets) phone number 420-5099

Nov. 23 - Returning letterman poster picture.  Going to Vertical Endeavors in St Paul area.  Talk to Troy.

Nov. 24 - First day of practice.

Nov. 25 - CERTIFICATION!  Bus leaves at 6pm from Maple Grove Senior High.  Everybody must attend.

I'll see you all soon.  Until then keep working hard - the beginning of your season will reflect what you're doing  now!

Thank you all...

I want to thank all of the parents for their overwhelming support during the past week and a half.  I believe it made a significant difference.  I know it meant the world to me.

I am pleased to announce that it's back to business as usual.  Speaking of business as usual our weight certification will be Tuesday, November 25th at Eden Prairie Fairview Clinic. They will provide skin technicians and physicians so we can get it all done in one spot.  They also provide pizza and cookies afterwords.  You must attend THIS certification in order to wrestle for Maple Grove this season.  If needed (if you are out of town or extemely ill) I will try to set up a skin technicial for another day but you would then need to see your own doctor.  As all of our returners know you must be certified to wrestle and I will be very strict in making sure that I am present at any certification before I allow you to compete this season.

I will go over this in more detail at our kick-off meeting.  Please contact me if you have any questions before then at 763-913-0601 or uwecwrestling@Hotmail.com.

Thanks again for everything.

Benefit dinner for Osseo head coach Kelly McConnville's family...

For those of you who don't know Osseo's head Coach Kelly McConnville has a one year old daughter who was born with a very rare genetic condition called Williams Syndrome.  Hazel has been in and out of the hospital her entire life.  As a result of this condition she will soon be having open heart surgury.  A benefit in her honor will be held November 15th.  For more information go to:  http://www.mcconville.us/hazel_benefit.html

I encourage anybody who can to go and to tell other people you know about it.  From my experience wrestlers - regardless of affiliation - support one another in their time of need.  I would like to see us support Kelly and his family as he would and has supported our wrestlers and their families.  Hope to see some of you there!

It's getting to be about that time...

The leaves are falling, the spring sports are nearing sectionals and wrestling is right around the corner.  We had our preseason coaches meeting on Tuesday and I'm getting excited - and I know I'm not the only one.  Here's a few examples of how I know:

~  Two of our wrestlers skipped the Osseo/Maple Grove football game to go down to Edina and wrestle at Olympian Ken Chertow's clinic.  Sophomores Will Anderson and Reid Weiland are getting that wrestling itch again.

~  Word is Zach Quam has been doing some shadow wrestling on his own.  Sounds like he's coming down with the itch as well.

~ I've heard from a number of parents that their boys keep saying they can't wait for wrestling to start.

~  An extreme Albino headed 9th grader (almost looked like Alex Gray with his head painted white) came up to me at the football game on Friday and couldn't stop talking about wrestling.

Here's a few other exciting things that are going on behind the scene:

  -  Wendy Borchardt has organized three different Chipotle feeds for the team throughout the season.  The first will be on Sunday, November 23rd at 5pm.  If anybody's interested I'd like to put a few touch football teams together mid afternoon that day before we head over to Chipotle.

  -  Wendy also got Chipotle to donate a free burrito each week of the season for the "wrestler of the week."  I'll tell you right now that first burrito will go to the wrestler who brings in the most wrestling recruits this season.

  -  In the next couple of weeks a decision will be made on the poster for this upcoming season.  I'll keep the returning letterman posted.

  -  Junior high and 9th grade football team recruitment days have been set.  I'm meeting with the 9th grade football team Oct. 21st.  I'll be hoping to repeat the 2006-2007 recruiting success there.  We'll be at Osseo Junior High on Oct. 30 and 31 (Halloween should be interesting) and at Maple Grove Junior High on Nov. 6th and 7th.  We'll need to have success - especially with the upper weights - in order to send the 9th grade team back to the state tournament.

  -  The preseason booster club meeting and kickoff meeting dates will be determined and sent out soon.

Also in Alumni news:

  -  Luke Vollmer says he "really has the itch to wrestle" down at Iowa State.  He had his mom send down his wrestling shoes and he's seriously considering joining the Division I powerhouse.  It'll be interesting to see if Luke decides to make that commitment and wrestle for Cael Sanders.

  -  Jackson has been working out three times a day in preperation for the season at Augsburg.  He still says he's scared of some of the conditioning workouts he's heard they'll be doing and "I'm going to be crying."  I'm sure he'll be fine though.

  -  Will Smith is making plans to come back and visit us all the way from Conneticut.  He hopes to come back over Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I think that's all for now.  Looking forward to the season.  It should be exciting and could be the best yet!
